Most residents of the Town of Billerica
know they can call 911 to get police, fire or medical
assistance. What they may not know is the police can
use the CodeRED Emergency Notification System
to notify residents and businesses about a potential
emergency circumstance. The CodeRED Emergency Notification System is a valuable tool for the department
to alert the community of "time critical"
messages. The CodeRED Emergency Notification System allows the police department to rapidly notify
specific geographical areas by telephone. What may
have taken hours upon hours and consuming a large portion
of staffing to accomplish can be done in a fraction
of that time with little impact on officer deployment. The capability to disseminate critical information in a very rapid manner with minimal staff means safety to residents and businesses alike. CodeRED employs a one-of-a-kind Internet mapping capability for geographic targeting of calls, coupled with a high speed telephone calling system capable of delivering customized pre-recorded emergency messages directly to homes and businesses at the rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour. Officers who would be pulled away from assignments to conduct door-to-door notification may be left at strategic posts or to respond as needs arise during a crisis. Citizens are alerted in a more timely fashion about critical events allowing them additional and sometimes crucial time to take action, such as evacuating in the case of eminent natural disasters.
